Glenn Band News - Gems and Indoor Drumline Contests

Glenn Band News: February 6 - February 10, 2023

Safe & Warm

Glenn Band Fans,

We hope that all of you have been able to stay warm and safe through the past several days. I have never experienced anything like the weather that we saw here in Austin last week; I was in Chicago visiting family and after several cancelled flights I arrived home to felled trees and an ice-covered home. We truly hope that all of you have been able to get through the past days unscathed and have been able to repair and tidy up in the past couple days of warmth.

This is a busy week with a lot of news - please read through everything below carefully as we celebrate our Grizzly Band students and prep you on everything coming up for us.

BRAVO!!!

Glenn Indoor Percussion Captivates Audience & Judges at First-Ever Contest

BRAVO to our outstanding Indoor Percussion members on a successful and victorious first show! Yesterday (February 4th, 2023) marked the first indoor drumline competition in the history of Glenn High School. Although only two groups competed in their class ("Percussion Scholastic A"), Glenn Indoor Percussion took home First Place with a score of 80.6. To all of our GIP members, staff, volunteers, and community, CONGRATULATIONS!

Please feel free to view scores for "Percussion Scholastic A" at BOTH events from yesterday. The judging panel was the same for both shows, so these judges evaluated all of these groups on the same playing field at both the Akins HS show and then the North Shore HS show.

Looking for Valentine's Chocolates? Give them the "World's Finest"!

Just in time for the "season of love", we will once again be offering students the chance to sell "World's Finest Chocolates" starting this week!

The fundraiser will run from tomorrow, 2/6, until Friday, 2/17.

This fundraiser is actually held by student request our band kiddos just really like selling these to friends at school and at home.

We'll also be offering three grand prize drawings this year! For every box that a student sells, they will receive one ticket in the grand prize drawing. At the end of the fundraiser we will draw three names from these tickets - first place will get to choose either a pair of AirPods or Beats Solo3 headphones, and second and third place will each win a $100 Amazon gift card!

Formal Attire Needs & Guidelines

As we approach our spring and UIL concert season, please be aware of the following guidelines for formal attire.

All students will be provided with a formal dress or tuxedo (tuxedo will include pants, jacket, and tie. A vest may also be included.) This attire must be worn in full for all concert performances.

Students will be sized for this attire in the next week during class time.

Please note: some students will require minor alterations for their formal attire, typically hemming for proper length. We are asking for parents to hem pants and dresses on their own - students will be allowed to take their attire home for alterations if they need hemming.

Grizzly Band Formal Attire Guidelines:

PURCHASED ITEMS

  • White Dress Shirt
  • Tuxedo-wearing students only: A standard white dress shirt, long sleeved, with a collar, must be worn.
  • Shoes

  • Formal dress-wearing students: Students will need black dress shoes. Flats are recommended. No stockings/hosiery/leggings should be worn.

JEWELRY

  • Students are allowed to wear small earrings, single necklace, and small rings. Hair ties and scrunchies should not be worn on the wrists.
  • It is concert tradition (and highly encouraged) for girls to wear pearls for concert performances.

UNDER THE CONCERT ATTIRE

  • Students wearing tuxedos must wear a plain white t-shirt underneath the dress shirt.

  • It is inappropriate to wear long pants under the dress.

Summer Band Rehearsals & Contest Day Notes

As with all Texas high school bands, please plan for your student to be at all of the above events. Look ahead now for SAT and ACT dates, as well as for vacation planning. I'll be heading to my log cabin in Wisconsin in June for a while so that I can be back for summer band! Please begin planning your summer/fall calendars for travel and testing now - we are SO EXCITED for next year's marching season and a big part of our success is having 100% attendance!

Conflicts are sure to come up - if you see these, please email me or Mr. Travis to let us know so that we can try to help with any possible solutions. Thank you!
